Preston Park (Brighton) Track Meet
13th August 2008

This was – alas! – the final evening of racing at Preston Park this season. An all-up group photo of the riders for the local newspaper preceded a 1-lap parade before the race action got underway. With some podium placings in most categories still hanging in the balance, there was tight competition tonight. The good news is that the rain held off for the whole meet, enabling all scheduled races to take place. And at the end of proceedings, there was tangible disappointment that the season had already ended, but the general consensus was that it had been the best season of track-racing at Preston Park for many years.
SENIORS
The expected battle for third place overall between Mark Burgess and Christian Yates didn’t happen after all, with Yates unable to attend this evening. League winner Felix English was also not on the start-line, so the door was open for battles between league runner-up Adam Gent, Mark Burgess, Lee Povey, Charlie Sayer, Martyn Potter, Charlie Heffernan, relative newcomer Luke Evans and several other hopefuls.
| Tim Mustin was first to launch an attack in the opening 8-lapper, going away on the very first circuit. His lead was reaching promising proportions when the prime whistle incited the bunch to react, 15-year-old Charlie Heffernan overhauling Mustin and taking the £5 pocket-money one lap later. It was soon all back together, then the irrepressible Rupert Rivett tried his luck with three to go. The alert bunch were having none of it, though, as Sayer, Potter, Burgess and Gent were spotted dragging the peloton back up to the fugitive. With two-and-a-half laps remaining, Luke Evans rode away very strongly. His move seemed to take the others by complete surprise, and you could almost sense them saying to themselves “Evans above!” The bunch accelerated on the last lap, but it was too late to catch Evans, who stormed through for a great win. Only seven riders survived the frantic pace over that final lap, Adam Gent winning the sprint for second ahead of Mark Burgess, Lee Povey, Oliver Pepper and the fast-improving Daniel Clark. | ![]() |
Three competitors qualified for the handicap final from each heat, and it was B-league winner Charlie Heffernan who won a close contest in front of Gent, Burgess, Pepper, Phil Smith and Sayer. Both senior categories lined up for a cracking points race over ten laps. Martin O’Brien sparked off an early breakaway, in which he was joined by Tim Hill, Andrew Edwards and Rob Dean. Edwards bagged the first maximum, then Hill was dropped making it three in the lead then the bunch. Two laps later, Edwards again grabbed five points, but at mid-race the peloton reeled in the break. Edwards won the sprint at the next payout to clinch the win, then the speed appeared to increase dramatically as Potter, Sayer and Povey upped the tempo. Povey took the last two maximums, crossing the line first, ahead of Sayer and Potter, while Luke Evans was first over the line from the remains of the bunch. Once the points totals had been worked out, it was inevitably Edwards who had won, followed by Povey, Sayer, Potter and Dean, with Martin O’Brien securing sixth spot.

There were no escapes in the B-cat 3-lap dash, Charlie Heffernan predictably winning the final sprint, followed by Pepper, Rivett, Smith, Edwards and Dean. Adam Gent and Charlie Sayer went away on the first lap of the parallel A-cat race and stayed ahead to the end, Sayer taking the win with Gent runner-up. Mark Burgess – certainly one of the most-improved riders this season – won the sprint for third, then it was Martyn Potter, Neil McClelland and Anthony Rogers.
The season concluded with a 10-lap course des primes, with £1 for the first over the line each lap and the race result decided on finish-line placings. Tim Mustin, Tim Hill and Nigel Foskett went away from the start. All three stayed ahead for the first four laps and shared the spoils between them. At mid-race, Foskett dropped back and Hill took his third prime, just as Luke Evans thundered past to take a lone lead. With two to go, Evans was joined by Adam Gent, but at the bell Lee Povey went into overdrive and secured an impressive win with a classic final lap. Gent took second place, then came Oliver Pepper, Luke Evans, Martin O’Brien and Charlie Heffernan.
The overall A-cat table was headed by Felix English, with Adam Gent second and Mark Burgess third. Charlie Heffernan won the B-league, and he was followed by Oliver Pepper and Phil Smith. Full rankings can be seen on scrl.co.uk.
YOUTHS
Several prize vouchers from AD Cycles were on offer tonight, and the £10 award this week went to Joe Hill for his aggressive and successful riding throughout the evening.
U16/U14
| Nick Smith won the £5 voucher prime at half-distance in the 4-lap scratch race, and at the bell Matthew Wise looked determined at the head of affairs. By the finish, though, it was Tom Jamieson who led through, with Tom Goldsmith second and U14 Milo Burdeau third. Next over the line was Nick Smith, followed in by Ashley Dennis and Kim English. Primes were available on each lap of the 3-lap dash, and this spurred the riders on to even faster speeds than usual. Tom Jamieson won the first lap-prize, then it was Nick Smith all the way as he took the second prime and also the finish award. Next in line were Tom Goldsmith, then Ashley, Milo, Tom Jamieson and Kim. | |

The U14s managed to stay away in the joint block handicap race, Milo rounding off a successful evening with a winning sprint ahead of Ashley and Kim. Next over the line was Amy Jacobs followed by Sara Gent, then Tom Goldsmith who was the first U16 home. U16 league champion is Nick Smith, with Tom Goldsmith second and Tom Jamieson third. Ashley Dennis won the U14 competition, while Milo Burdeau was runner-up and Kim English was third.

The U12 title goes to Gabriel Parle ahead of Jake Marley and Amy Barnes.

U10/U8
| The 1-lap scratch race for U8s was won in style by Bethany Lewis in front of Cory Anderson and Sian Carr. Joe Hill came first in the joint 1-lap handicap, Sam Barnes riding well for second spot and Bethany third. Joe rounded off a fine evening with a lone win in the 2-lap block handicap, Ted O’Brien, Nicholas Wickens, Bethany Lewis, Cory Anderson and Ben O’Brien taking the other points-scoring placings. The U10 title this season went to Ted O’Brien ahead of Douglas McCauley and Ben O’Brien. Top U8 of the year was Bethany Lewis who finished in front of Cory Anderson and Harry Stacey. | ![]() |
